The entire university community of the Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area has been thrown into a mild unrest as staff of the institution barricaded the school’s main entrance to protest over what they have described as ‘illegal deductions in their basic monthly remuneration and non-payment of statutory allowances’.

One of the protesting staff who pleaded anonymity disclosed that the major bone of contention of the protest was the refusal of the school authority to include the new minimum wage package recently approved by the Akwa Ibom State government in their February remuneration.

He also added that the situation has been further aggravated by the refusal of the university to pay another of the staff entitlements popularly called ‘the peculiar allowance’.

It would be recalled early last month, the Government of Akwa Ibom State had approved the implementation of the new minimum wage which was to affect all salaries from January 2020 onward.
